DMPS
DMPS
(dimercaptoproprane-l-sulfonic acid), is a medication
developed in Germany to remove heavy metals from
the body. It is given intravenously and binds
to mercury in the tissues and allows it to be
excreted by the kidneys and the intestines. It
also binds to other toxic metals such as lead,
arsenic, cadmium and tin as well as non-toxic
minerals such as zinc, copper and magnesium. DMPS
does not accumulate in the body nor does it cause
increase in heavy metal levels in the brain. DMPS
is not an FDA approved drug in the U.S. but is
available on the list of medications that can
be used by a compounding pharmacy. DMPS will remove
mercury within 1 - 2 hours and allow it to be
excreted by the urine. One way of determining
if you have high mercury is to measure the
level of mercury in the urine after a treatment.
The level of mercury released will be in a bell
shaped curve, the first treatment will often be
low and with each successive treatment more mercury
will come out. Side effects can include allergic
reactions at the sight of injection or on the
skin, fatigue, mental confusion, depression, muscle
aches and pain in the kidneys. These effects are
transitory and usually resolve.
Please
follow these instructions if you will be taking

DMSA
DMSA
is an oral medication available for the
detoxification of mercury and lead. It binds
to mercury and is excreted in the urine. It can
also be used to diagnose mercury toxicity. With
DMSA, the pills are taken on an empty stomach
and then urine is collected for 6 hours. It does
not penetrate into the cells as effectively as
DMPS. DMSA can also cause side effects such as
fatigue, muscle aches and depression. Since DMSA
also allows for the excretion of mercury into
the urine, it is essential that you drink a lot
of water during the treatment. Small dosages of
DMSA can be taken weekly to remove mercury from
the body. This can be adjusted based on your weight
and sensitivity.
